Reports to: Assistant Director of College Guidance and Transition
Status: Full-time Exempt
Start Date: Summer 2019

The Job
The Opportunity Network is looking for a driven and dynamic individual to join our collaborative College Guidance and Transition team. The College Guidance and Transition Program Assistant will provide the highest quality student-driven college guidance and transition counseling, including supporting the 12th grade OppNet Fellows with honing their sense of college “fit, curating a “best fit” college list, completing all college application and financial aid requirements, assessing financial aid packages, and making their final matriculation decision. This role will simultaneously support the first year of college Fellows in navigating their transition to campus life, whether they are commuters or residential students. The Program Assistant will work with outstanding students, enjoy the freedom to create and collaborate, and seize a real opportunity to create social change. The position is located in downtown Manhattan.

The Person
The ideal candidate will personally connect to the important work we do and value diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) across the organization. The candidate will demonstrate an awareness of the needs and challenges faced by high school and college-level students from historically underserved and underrepresented communities. The candidate will
demonstrate DE&I values by actively participating in all organizational-wide learning sessions and self-reflection as well as working with others to enact changes that contribute to meeting the organization’s DE&I goals. The candidate should possess outstanding professionalism and discretion, organization and attention to detail, energy and initiative, the ability to prioritize and complete a variety of tasks on time, and a willingness to work on a wide range of assignments.

Responsibilities

Individualized College Guidance and Transition Coaching and Student Relationship-Building (65%)
• College Guidance Counseling and Coaching
o Advise and support a caseload of high school seniors (25-30) – and their families – throughout the college application process through one-on-one meetings and group sessions in which students will: create balanced college lists, complete applications, and identify and apply for scholarships
o Work with Fellows and volunteers to develop and edit personal statements, supplemental essays, and essays for scholarships
o Assist in the completion of financial aid forms (FAFSA, TAP, CSS Profile, etc.) and conduct financial aid counseling for Fellows and families
o In collaboration with the College Guidance & Transition Team, liaise with college admissions officers to advocate for Fellows throughout the decision process, ensure that all college contacts are up to date, and build upon relationships with admissions teams at colleges across the country

• College Transition Check-Ins
o Conduct 1:1 check-ins with a designated caseload of first year college Fellows (15-20) and conduct campus visits at roughly 4-6 local campuses throughout the fall and spring semesters
o Manage scheduling, travel, and communication with Fellows for the check-in process
o Follow up with College Fellows to provide relevant resources to manage issues College Fellows are facing on campus, e.g. academic challenges, socio-emotional challenges, adjusting to college life, connecting with professors, etc.
o Conduct research to identify programmatic additions to reinforce the education-to-career connection

• Student Outreach and Relationship Management
o Work with College Success team to ensure seamless transfer of relationships from first year to second year of college
o Collaborate with the Program Manager, College Success and the OppNet Fellows program team to design and deliver student-centered and student-driven high quality and high impact events, e.g. winter conference, spring series, summer series, etc.
o Coordinate and support communication to high school and college Fellows - e.g. marketing cloud, newsletters, text messaging platform, etc.
o Explore how to build relationships with student affairs professionals on college campuses where OppNet Fellows attend school
o Work with the College Success Team to identify new, and build upon existing relationships/partnerships on campuses where Fellows currently attend school

Overall Program Assistance – 35%
• Data & Record-Keeping
o Maintain detailed records on Fellows’ admissions decisions, financial aid packages, GPAs, test scores, etc.
o Track data, statistics and competencies related to OppNet programming for reporting and evaluation purposes
• Event Planning
o Chaperone and support the planning of the college visits for 11th and 12th grade Fellows
o Help Fellows identify and apply for fall fly-in programs
o Assist with coordination of SAT/ACT prep classes
o Collaborate with the College Guidance and Transition team on all aspects of programming and special events
• OppNet Fellows Program Coordination
o Provide administrative assistance and facilitate sessions on college access, transition, and success for all
OppNet Fellows
o Provide individualized support to in-college Fellows through one-on-one check-in meetings and evaluate
Fellows’ progress based on a predetermined rubric
o Participate in Career Fluency® facilitation training
o Facilitate Career Fluency® workshops across the Fellows program in order to build rapport with Fellows
o Facilitate annual intensive programming and special events as required, e.g. Summer Institute, College
Application Boot Camp, and College Transition Boot Camp, Speed Networking, Career Fluency® panels
o Lead recruitment visits/information sessions at area high schools and interview prospective Fellows

Qualifications & Requirements
Qualifications
● B.A. from a U.S. accredited U.S. college/university;
● Two to three years of work experience, preferably in the in the college counseling/college success field;
● Familiarity with the realm of financial aid; understanding of nontraditional situations (knowledge of undocumented students, under legal guardianship, seeking dependency override, etc.), scholarship opportunities, and HEOP/EOP/SEEK programs a plus;
● Experience working with students to craft personal statements and college supplements;
● Knowledge of how higher education student services/affairs support college students a plus;
● Demonstrated ability to connect with high school and college-level students from historically underserved and underrepresented communities;
● Can facilitate interactive workshops in rigorous but dynamic fashion; understands how to be both nurturing and demanding; appreciates boundaries, but not afraid to push or challenge;
● Demonstrated skill set in project management, including:
o ability to keep a project moving toward successful completion
o awareness of budget parameters
o ability to set and meet deadlines
o understands how metrics and competencies are connected to various projects
o effective cross-departmental communication
o detail oriented
o outstanding organizational skills
o creative and critical problem-solving skills
● Superb written and oral communication skills;
● Comfort and familiarity with data management and Microsoft Excel a plus;
● In addition to English fluency, fluent/proficient in Spanish, Mandarin and/or Bengali a plus, but not required;
● Availability and willingness to work select evenings and some weekends;
● Ability to travel to college campuses throughout the country and has a valid driver’s license;
● Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a commitment to and passion for OppNet’s values and mission.
