Many of you who know me well know that I am an avid reader and I just love, love, love books, reading and writing! In light of these passions, is the rebirth of my book club. After an almost 2 year hiatus, The Culture Clique is back . . . this time with a new name, Echelon Book Club! So those of you who were with me before and wish to re-join, as well as new prospective members, please take a moment and review the information below. Hopefully, Echelon Book Club will intrigue you, and if you are serious about and willing to commit to membership, please email Tavares Carney at echelonbooks@yahoo.com at your earliest convenience.
Also, please feel forward to pass this information to anyone you think may be interested.
Thank you,
Mrs. Tavares S. Carney, Founder
Mission: The mission of Echelon Book Club is to introduce men and women of all ages to an array of African-American authors and literature, focusing on literacy and providing a forum for interactive discussion about literature and the African-American culture.
About Us: Founded by Tavares Carney, an avid reader and recognized book reviewer of African-American literature, Echelon Book Club is based in Southfield, MI. Our members are from diverse backgrounds, sharing commonality in the desire for mental, spiritual and cultural stimulation through literature.
Membership: Membership in Echelon Book Club is by invitation, referral by a current member in good-standing, or application, only. Please e-mail echelonbooks@yahoo.com for a membership application.
Book Selection: Book nominations are requested 3 months in advance. All members are given the opportunity to nominate titles and vote for a proposed book of the month (“BOM”). Nominated titles should be authored by an African-American and fall within the Christian Fiction, Self-Help/Awareness, Inspirational Romance or the Religion/Spirituality book genres. Mainstream literature titles will also be considered. For these selections, the nominating member must suggest the book’s potential for inspiration, motivation encouragement, or otherwise, stimulating discussion or topic(s) affecting the African-American community. Our first BOM will be announced December 15, 2009 for the charter BOM in January 2010.
Meetings: From the outset, Echelon Books will hold monthly meetings at the Southfield Public Library in Southfield, Michigan. The book club will also have an online presence for virtual members, and members not able to attend the local meetings. Meeting dates and times TBA.
Dues: No monies are required at this time. At a later date, and on occasion, should the group collectively decide to host an author, provide food and beverages for meetings, etc., a nominal dues amount may be solicited.
